Organizations I would volunteer for! :)

Susan G. Komen for the Cure-Breast Cancer
I would support this organization because I have had relatives with breast cancer. I have been involved with this organization already also.

American Cancer Society
I would support this organization because both of my grandpas died from cancer.

Wild Horses Rescue
There are a lot of wild horses that are starving and getting killed and I would like to help stop all of the suffering of the horses.

Effects on the South

After the south surrendered they realized they lost a lot more than just the war. Many lives were lost, homes were destroyed, cities were ruined, and building were destroyed. However, the damage went beyond physical damage, many southerns faced starvation. Where there used to be rich farm land now was destroyed land and barren. Many of the southern farm animals had been killed or had run away. The South was struggling and there was still tension between the blacks and the whites. The south came up with "Black Codes". The "Black Codes" applied to African Americans. They were not allowed to vote, own land, or work certain jobs.

The reconstruction plan of Johnson and Lincoln were very similar, but the reconstruction plan of the congress was completely different. The congress wanted to punish the southern former slave owners. They wanted a majority of the people to pledge loyalty. Johnson and Lincoln wanted to pardon southerners who took oath instead of punishing them. They only wanted 10% to pledge loyalty to rejoin the union.

Many northerners move south to help with the reconstruction of the south. They were called carpetbaggers. They were elected to political office in the south. They took advantage of people and made money through corruption.

On the plantations slave labor could no longer be used, so LOW wages were paid to former enslaved people. The profit of the plantation owners was decreased, because of this two new styles of farming were invented; Tenant Farming and Sharecroppers.

Utah's Homeless Rates

Utah Homelessness--Roughly .6% of Utah's population is homeless compared to 1.2% nationally.

• 86 percent are temporarily homeless; they stay in shelters for brief periods and do not return
• 10 percent are chronically homeless, those with a disabling condition who have been homeless for one year or more, or who have fallen into homelessness at least four times within three years. The vast majority are male, and one-third are veterans. Many struggle with mental illness and addictions.
• 65 percent are single men or women
• 43 percent are people in families, the fastest growing segment of the homeless population
• 85 percent are Utah residents; your neighbors, friends and relatives
• 90 percent live along the Wasatch Front, concentrated in Salt Lake and Weber counties

Colleges I like!...Me gusta!

Northwestern College
I would like to go to Northwestern because they have a good Athletic Training program. The college is also small and I would like to go to a small college. I have also went to basketball camps at Northwestern and I like the campus.

Wayne State College
I want to go to Wayne State College because they are known for their Athletic Training program. The college also is known to have a friendly campus. I have heard from people that they like the college and they have recommended it.

Morningside College
Morningside has a good teaching program and I am also considering being a math teacher. The math program at Morningside is one of the best. I want to stay local and Morningside is not that far away from home.

9-22-10 Video Games In School

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128081896

Some people think that playing video games helps the kids in school learn better. They say that the video games turn the girls into "phenomenal learners". I think that if it is a proven fact that it help kids learn, then it should be allowed in school. The amount of time playing video games should be limited though, they should limit what they play too.

9-21-10 Horse Racing Cruelty

http://chai-online.org/en/compassion/entertainment_racing.htm

The horse racing industry is very cruel and many horses must be produced to generate only a few fast ones. Many horses are slaughtered and abandoned every year because of horse racing. Horses are forced to train before their body is completely ready to train, so they are hurting themselves. When a race horse is hurt they are either euthanized or sold to someone who beats them. Do you think it is right to treat these race horses the way they do?

Examining death of Denver Broncos' Kenny McKinley - Jon Wertheim - SI.com

Some professional athletes are having mental problems. Some are becoming depressed, but their teammates and coaches do not do anything about it even if the individual says something about their problems to them. One person broke his ankle and his teammates texted him daily making sure he was recovering, but when he told them about his mental illness they basically told him to suck it up. Do you think it is right for teammates and coaches to only care about the injuries if they are physical?

Water That Kills-Bangladesh

Water that kills
The water in Bangladesh is contaminated with Arsenic, the levels are 5 times the legal limit. It causes cancer and other problems. They found something that will help get the Arsenic out but it will cost money. My question is do you think the government should pay for it?

Doctor sued for 'branding' patients uterus

A California gynecologist is being sued for branding a patients name on her uterus using an "electrocautery device". The doctor removed a woman's uterus during an operation at his Orange County office 2006. He carved "Ingrid" on the uterus so he would not get it confused with others. My question is do you think it is right to sue the doctor?

Afghan police and anit-U.S. protesters clash in Kabul

An anti-American demonstration in the Afghan capitol turned violent. Five Afghan police officers were injured and two demonstrators were shot by police.  About1,200 anti-American demonstrators gathered on Wednesday and were chanting "Death to America. The demonstrators started shooting and throwing stones at police. My question is what should be the punishment to these anti-Americans?

Women's Clothing

Some women are saying that they can wear whatever they what to wear because it is a free country. Others are saying that they are exposing too much and should not be able to. My question is do you think any woman should be able to wear what they want to wear no matter how much it reveals?

Is raising the school lunch prices for profit right?

Some schools in the United States are having money trouble and they are raising the school lunch prices so the can gain money. They are making students pay more money for the same amount of food so they can make money off of the students. Do you think this is right?
